It is totally understandable to feel nervous before a first appointment with a new therapist. During the first 1-2 sessions, the focus is on gaining a comprehensive history and identifying current problems/stressors. Traditionally, I ask questions regarding past experiences, family history and current stressors you are facing. If you feel comfortable moving forward, we will also talk about what your goals for therapy are and make a plan to work towards those goals.
Sometimes individuals do feel better after the first appointment, as they may have a sense of relief. However, you may not immediately feel better after an initial appointment. Therapy can be emotionally painful because we are actively looking at ourselves in a deep, self-reflective way and potentially have to make some difficult decisions in order to alleviate our symptoms. Although in the short-term it may be tough, the potential long-term gains can be worthwhile. Through the process of therapy, the goal is to increase one's self-esteem, identify and implement prosocial coping skills and improve our relationships.
